Why Is a Butter Bean Called a Butter Bean?

Giant bean, lima bean, butter bean… this large, creamy bean goes by several different names around the world. That can be a little confusing. Are they all the same bean?

In most cases, yes.

The name lima bean comes from the bean’s origins and is linked to Lima, the capital of Peru. Butter bean is the name commonly used in English-speaking countries and refers to the bean’s rich, buttery texture when cooked. And that’s exactly why, at Amaizin, we love the name butter bean.

Buttery Soft, Without the Butter

Despite the name, there’s no butter in a butter bean. The name comes from its texture. Once cooked, butter beans become wonderfully soft and creamy, with an almost velvety mouthfeel. While some beans stay quite firm, butter beans are known for their smooth, melt-in-the-mouth consistency………..3

That’s what makes them perfect for hearty stews, creamy curries, soups, salads and even dips. In short: a bean with a naturally buttery bite.

Our Creamiest Bean Yet

Thanks to their mild flavour, butter beans are incredibly versatile. They readily absorb herbs, spices and sauces, making them a great addition to dishes from all over the world. Add them to a fragrant curry, toss them into a stew, blend them into a dip or roast them until golden and crispy. Butter beans can do it all. And because they’re larger than many other beans, they add plenty of substance to any meal.

Why Organic?

At Amaizin, everything we do is organic. Our butter beans are no exception .Organic farmers grow crops without synthetic pesticides or artificial fertilisers. Instead, they work with nature to support healthy soils, encourage biodiversity and help build a more resilient food system for future generations.

To us, that’s simply the way food should be grown.

A Small Bean with Big Benefits

Butter beans don’t just taste great. They’re naturally rich in plant-based protein and fibre, making them a wholesome ingredient for everyday cooking. As legumes, they also play a valuable role on the farm. Legumes help improve soil health by fixing nitrogen from the air, reducing the need for additional fertilisers and supporting more sustainable farming systems.

Soft. Creamy. Buttery.

That’s the magic of the organic butter bean. 🫘💛🌱
